Omāroro Water Reservoir

Omāroro Water Reservoir is a bulk water storage facility and key infrastructure project for the Wellington region. WorkZone Scaffolds, along with their partners, NZS Group, Wellington Scaffolding Services, HEB and Wellington Water, won the contract to assist in the building of this significant project.

Located above the playing fields at Prince of Wales Park, the buried concrete tank will more than double the city’s water storage capacity. The reservoir tank is 60m in diameter, 14m high at the centre and will hold up to 35 million litres of water. It will provide a significant increase in water storage for Wellington city and in the event supply pipes are disrupted, the reservoir will ensure 48 hours supply of water to the city.

400t of scaffold

Jason Purser, WorkZone Scaffolds Operations Manager said, “we erected over 400 tonnes of scaffold and slim soldiers to support the 1,300m² of concrete (3,100 Ton). Due to the size of the project it was undertaken in two halves, with the first half completed by a crew of 16 scaffolders in three weeks. This was followed by a further 6 weeks to dismantle and re-erect the scaffold for the second half, before the full scaffold was dismantled and removed through a single hatch in the roof measuring 2.4m by 3m.”

“Obviously with a job on this scale the team were under pressure to get the job done within a set time limit, and I’m pleased to report we finished this job ahead of time, and under budget. The client, HEB, was really happy with our collective efforts and continues to work with us, which is a great outcome from the project,” said Jason.

Gear and logistics

Jason continued “obviously there’s a lot of different aspects to the job which made it a success. One of the things that assisted us were the designs provided by Layher. The Layher plans were awesome, with features such as colour-coded standards to assist our staff on site. Also, just-in-time delivery of the equipment helped with the build too. I don’t think others realise the amount of gear and logistics that was involved in this, it was a massive project. The logistics would have to have been the biggest challenge – sourcing the material at short notice from Layher, getting all that gear to site and trying to fit it into the available times to get it up the road.”

Fantastic crew

To conclude Jason said “Both HEB and Wellington Water were very happy with everything we achieved, especially delivering it on time and under budget. We could not have done this without a fantastic crew – they were on site, and on the tools, from 6:30 in the morning and regularly did not leave until 4:30pm, week after week. WorkZone is also thankful to its partners Wellington Scaffolding Services and NZS Group who also provided a lot of assistance in the planning, design and execution of the contract.”
