Innovative Birdcage Scaffolding for Naenae Pools Redevelopment

When WorkZone Scaffolds was engaged to provide scaffolding for the Naenae Pools redevelopment in Lower Hutt, the team faced a significant access challenge. The major community project required extensive external scaffolding and multiple large-scale birdcage structures to support construction of the new aquatic facilities.

With numerous trades working simultaneously across a busy construction site, the scaffold needed to provide safe, reliable access while remaining flexible enough to accommodate changing construction requirements.

Using Layher’s Allround Lightweight Scaffolding System, together with extensive use of 750mm lattice trusses, WorkZone Scaffolds delivered an adaptable access solution that supported the complex construction programme from February 2023 through to March 2025.

Large-Scale Birdcage Scaffolding Solution

One of the project’s most impressive features was the scale of the birdcage scaffolding constructed over the swimming pool areas.

Two of the largest structures measured 14 metres high by 58 metres long and 34 metres wide, and 14 metres high by 30 metres long and 20 metres wide, providing extensive elevated working platforms for the various construction trades.

The size and complexity of these structures required careful planning, particularly with multiple contractors needing access to different areas throughout the project.

Layher’s Allround Lightweight Scaffolding provided the versatility required to accommodate these changing demands. Its modular design enabled WorkZone Scaffolds to efficiently modify and adapt the structure as construction progressed, allowing trades to continue working without unnecessary disruption.

The system’s high load-bearing capacity, lightweight components and flexible configuration options made it well suited to the project’s complex access requirements.

Flexible Scaffolding for a Busy Construction Site

With numerous subcontractors working across the site, access requirements were constantly evolving. WorkZone Scaffolds needed to respond quickly to changing circumstances, adapting working platforms and scaffold configurations as new construction activities commenced.

The combination of Layher Allround Lightweight’s modular flexibility and WorkZone’s technical expertise enabled the team to develop practical solutions while minimising disruption to other trades.

This adaptability was particularly valuable in keeping the scaffolding aligned with the wider construction programme, ensuring access requirements could be accommodated as the project developed.

Collaborative Design and Engineering Support

A key factor in the project’s success was the close collaboration between WorkZone Scaffolds and Layher’s design team.

Using a detailed 3D model of the pool structure supplied by the project team, Layher developed scaffold and birdcage designs to accommodate the complex construction requirements.

Particular consideration was given to the installation of pipework, hydroslides and other equipment beneath the birdcage structures, ensuring the scaffold would not obstruct essential construction activities.

One of the most challenging requirements involved allowing the spiral hydroslides to be constructed while the scaffold remained in place. The carefully designed birdcage structures provided the necessary working space and access while accommodating construction around and beneath them.

The design also needed to allow concrete trucks to enter the building and manoeuvre beneath the birdcage scaffolding. Layher incorporated the necessary clearances into the scaffold design, balancing structural requirements with practical site access.

This early collaboration helped WorkZone deliver a solution that supported multiple stages of construction without the scaffold becoming a constraint on progress.

A Valuable Project for the WorkZone Team

Beyond the technical challenges, the Naenae Pools redevelopment provided an important opportunity for the WorkZone team to develop their skills and experience on a large-scale local project.

“This was a great local project for us. We all learned a lot, and the experience has been great for our growth, development, knowledge and experience.”
– WorkZone Scaffolds crew

With numerous trades operating simultaneously and access requirements continually evolving, the project required strong coordination, problem-solving and adaptability throughout its duration.

WorkZone Scaffolds maintained a professional approach to delivering the scaffold within the required timeframes, with the flexibility of Layher’s systems helping the team respond to the changing demands of the construction programme.

Supporting an Important Community Development

The Naenae Pools redevelopment represents a significant investment in recreational facilities for the Naenae and wider Lower Hutt community.

For WorkZone Scaffolds, contributing to a major project in their local area was a source of pride, with the team gaining valuable experience while helping deliver an important community facility.

The combination of Layher Allround Lightweight Scaffolding, specialist design support and WorkZone’s skilled installation team provided a practical, adaptable access solution for one of the region’s significant construction projects.

The successful delivery demonstrates how innovative scaffold design, early collaboration and modular flexibility can overcome demanding access challenges while supporting efficient construction across complex, multi-trade environments.
