Wairau Bridge Cycleway

Scaffold Marlborough were asked to scaffold Wairau River Bridge SH1 in Blenheim. Rob Helstrom of Scaffold Marlborough said “The purpose of this project was to install a steel support structure for the new cycleway addition to the pier of the existing SH1 Bridge over the Wairau River.

This required workers to drill into the pier and attach the structural supports for the addition. The cycleway, The Whale Trail, is being constructed between Picton and Kaikoura and the Wairau River was to be its first major hurdle during construction. The solution for the Wairau River was to ‘clip’ a steel cycle track onto the downstream side of the existing concrete SH1 Bridge. Fulton Hogan Marlborough were the main contractor on the project.”

Rob continued “The project took 3-4 men 1.5 days for the install, and it was taken down in less than a day. For us, the Layher system offers us quick, simple connections and ease of use. Because of this it is quick to train new staff and allows for fast turnaround on most projects. We also appreciate the multiple components available with an almost unlimited design capability. Our relationship with the Layher team has been vital in our business since we began back in 2005, with great support and advice along the way. As well as quick and efficient designs, the Layher team have always been friendly and helpful with advice and quick to get gear dispatched.”

Regarding the design and Layher’s engineering team Rob said “Layher’s design allowed us to meet the requirements of our client including access for multiple workers as well as using heavy drilling equipment on the bridge pier. Because we have used Edgar and his team on multiple occasions, we knew the design was going to be more than capable of meeting these requirements. The design was also created using our own gear that we had available in stock, so we did not need to purchase extra gear to get the job done.”
