At the top of the South Island, Upright Scaffolding were contracted to provide access to all areas to a bulk fuel storage tank.

Operated by Z Energy, in Port Nelson, the bulk petroleum storage tank has the capacity to hold approximately 8,000,000 litres of fuel. Upright Scaffolding provided safe access for contractors to carry out essential blasting and painting work on the cylindrical container.

Round scaffold design

Nick Pfahlert, Upright Scaffolding’s Director said “the tank measured about 26 metres in diameter and 16 metres tall. This encapsulation job required engineering a round scaffold design along with a cone shaped roof structure. We chose to use Layher Allround Lightweight Scaffolding because the rosettes made light work of the circular tank. The highly configurable rosettes meant we could adjust the scaffold to exactly the right angle.”

“We faced many challenges on this job including high winds, due to the site being located at a port. Also, we were required to meet multiple, and often complex, pre-qualification and certification requirements. In addition, we had a narrow timeframe for this scaffold project, so speed and efficiency were key factors.” said Nick.

Fast and safe

Nick continued “Our customer was very pleased with the outcome. They were especially delighted with the way the Upright Scaffolding guys erected the scaffold in a fast but safe manner. We’d like to thank the Layher design team for all their support too.”
