Waimea Community Dam Scaffold

The Waimea Community Dam project has been the first dam constructed in New Zealand for 30 years. Located in Nelson, Tasman the Waimea Community Dam project is a Fulton Hogan/Taylors Joint Venture project. Measuring 220 metres in length, the dam will create a lake holding approximately 13 billion litres of water.

Cranable scaffold

Geeves Scaffolding Nelson were tasked with providing safe access solutions to this once in a lifetime project. Using Layher’s design team, Geeves Scaffolding constructed multiple cranable scaffolding with a combination of Layher Allround Lightweight Scaffolding and crane lifting eyes.

In addition, the team at Geeves Scaffolding Nelson installed over 300 vertical metres of stair access towers, which included over 2,000 swivel jacks on uneven ground! Stairs provided access to the rock faces and concrete structures of the Waimea Community Dam. During the build, the site has been hit with several ‘over the top’ flooding events. However, all scaffolds were undamaged and remained in place.

Waimea dam challenge

Aonghus McGahern from Geeves Scaffolding Nelson said “the difficult terrain meant this was a very challenging work environment. But it was fully satisfying to see the progress and the satisfaction of the workers with the access and working platforms provided on site”. Since the start of this job there hasn’t been one single injury on or from the scaffold, this was also notice by the top Managing Director of Fulton Hogan “Saying the access he saw on the Waimea Dam was second to none from all his NZ and Australia sites.

Layher design team

“The main benefit of using Layher on this project is the absolute flexibility of this system of scaffolding. It has been really beneficial to us to find solutions on the sloping surface of the dam that varies in elevation from 20+ to 30+ degrees. This meant we had changing requirements onsite. However, the Layher design team were impeccable, fast and fully supportive, when needing to address the demanding alterations,” said Aonghus.

Aonghus continued “the customer was extremely satisfied with the access provided onsite. Especially for us to make the scaffolding winchable or cranable. There has not been an occasion where we were not able to provide a solution using Layher scaffolding onsite.”
