Hodder River Suspension

The Hodder Bridge, 63 kilometres southwest of Seddon. Strengthening work was undertaken on the Hodder Bridge on the Awatere Valley Road so it can once again carry trucks and heavy vehicles through the region.

Suspension bridge scaffold

It was a challenging environment for the Scaffold Marlborough guys to work in, 40m off the riverbed, working underneath an almost 80 year old suspension bridge. Engineers had to add extra steel beams running the full length of the bridge which meant that a work platform was needed 2m below the road deck on either side of the bridge. This was achieved by using the Layher Allround Scaffolding System, suspending a scaffold box underneath the main road deck and spurring out to give the desired work platforms.

Bridge maintenance scaffold

Once the scaffold was in place, Marlborough roads maintenance contract manager Wayne Oldfield said the work would take seven weeks to complete. It had been closed to trucks and other heavy vehicles for the past year as it was considered too weak, he said. Heavy vehicles had been using a ford to cross the Hodder River. With the job now complete the bridge is once again able to be safely used by all traffic.
