Hotel Grand Chancellor Demolition
Elliott Scaffolding was commissioned by Fletcher Construction to undertake this technically challenging and extremely dangerous shoring project in Christchurch following the devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake on 22nd February, 2011.
Cluster of 16 Allround standards
The shoring solution, a collaboration of Layher, local consulting engineer Structex, and Elliott Scaffolding (one of New Zealand’s most experienced shoring companies), involved the use of more than 200tonne of Layher Allround and structural steel. The largest heavy duty propping configuration was a cluster of 16 Layher Allround standards, capable of withstanding 65tonne.
Trevor Elliott, owner of Elliott Scaffolding, commented that “this project was especially challenging because the loads could not be transferred through the buildings floors, only the beams”. The risk of further earthquakes and collapse also meant that an effective rescue plan was needed, part of which involved installing a 62m Layher platform stair tower independent to the building. This 70m tall building is the largest demolition ever carried out in New Zealand.
