Gothic Chapel Restoration

The Chapel of the Sacred Heart, recognised as one of New Zealand’s finest examples of Gothic architecture, has recently undergone significant interior restoration work. This 1930s, Category 1-listed building required a sensitive and highly precise access solution to ensure its preservation for future generations.

WorkZone Scaffolds, supported by Layher’s systems and technical expertise, delivered a tailored scaffolding solution that provided safe and efficient access to every part of the intricate interior.

Precision Access for Delicate Restoration Work

“We were asked to provide a working platform that reached every side and detailed area of the chapel’s interior,” said Kurt Simpson of WorkZone Scaffolds. “Using Layher’s modular system, we could adapt the bay sizes precisely to fit the space, with bridging transoms enabling full decking coverage.”

Given the heritage status of the building, the lightweight nature of Layher’s equipment was a major advantage, helping to minimise loads on the original timber floors. “Layher’s lighter components allowed us to build extensive platforms while protecting the historic structure,” said Kurt.

To accommodate the chapel’s unique tapered roof, Layher’s engineering team provided detailed design support, including a custom birdcage scaffold solution. “The design assistance meant we could plan the gear list accurately, with correct standard and deck heights, ensuring smooth installation,” Kurt added.

WorkZone also presented the client with a 3D model of the scaffolding solution prior to construction. “The 3D visualisation gave the client complete confidence in the approach. They could see exactly how access would be achieved without compromising the building,” Kurt noted.

Layher’s adaptable system and design support enabled safe, effective access to all intricate areas, including high-level arched ceilings and detailed window features, ensuring that the restoration team could complete their work efficiently and with care.
