Ngāmotu House Redevelopment

Located in the heart of New Plymouth, the building formerly known as the Atkinson Building underwent a major transformation and is now known as Ngāmotu House. This central-city redevelopment required a high-performing scaffolding solution that delivered safe, multi-level access, full weather protection, and efficient material handling over the course of a 12-month programme.

Smart Scaffold Access for Urban Redevelopment

Cunningham Construction was entrusted with delivering the full scaffolding scope for the project. Working in close partnership with Layher’s engineering team, they constructed a 35-metre-high scaffold tailored to the façade requirements and evolving site conditions.

“We built the scaffold based on Layher’s design, which included hop-ups to access the underside of the building’s spandrels,” said Greg Lockley of Cunningham Construction. “We also installed a GEDA 1200 hoist, which helped reduce build time and improve material handling.”

What stood out on this project was how effectively the scaffold system integrated with the site’s logistical and structural demands. The completed scaffold measured 22.5 metres wide and 50 metres long, fully encapsulated with a Layher Keder Roof to allow uninterrupted progress during poor weather, a key advantage in the New Plymouth climate. The solution also included a 75m pedestrian and vehicle gantry and hoarding which was constructed using Layher’s ‘Protect’ panel cladding system.

Layher Allround Lightweight Scaffolding played a central role. The reduced weight of the components improved handling and assembly times, while easing physical strain on installers. The modular system allowed Cunningham’s team to adapt quickly to the building’s geometry and the needs of each construction phase.

The project progressed with confidence, supported by a scaffold system that enhanced both safety and productivity. Layher’s precision-engineered gear enabled a reliable, adaptable access solution, contributing to the successful delivery of this high-profile redevelopment.

Layher New Zealand thanks Greg Lockley and the team at Cunningham Construction for sharing this project and for their continued commitment to excellence on site.
