T&G Building Restoration (The Dome), Napier
The T&G Building in Napier, also known as The Dome, underwent a careful heritage restoration supported by Rocket Scaffolding using Layher Allround Lightweight scaffolding, enabling safe, efficient access with minimal disruption to businesses and the public.
Multi-Stage Scaffold for a Heritage Facelift
Located on the corner of Marine Parade and Emerson Street, the T&G Building, also known as The Dome, is one of Napier’s most iconic and photographed heritage structures. Built in 1935–36 as part of Napier’s post-earthquake reconstruction, the building is a prominent feature of the city’s internationally recognised Art Deco district. Today, it houses restaurants, apartments, and commercial spaces, all beneath its signature copper-domed clock tower.
Recently, the building underwent a significant restoration aimed at preserving its character and protecting the structure for future generations. The works included façade repainting, roof repairs, removal of outdated fittings, and plans to recommission the long-silent clock. Due to its central location, heritage status, and complex architecture, the project required a carefully staged access solution with minimal disruption to public areas and operating businesses.

Rocket Scaffolding was engaged to provide full scaffold access for the 9-month project. The job was carried out in three main stages: the Emerson Street frontage, the Marine Parade frontage, and finally the distinctive corner cupola and clock tower. The scaffold reached a maximum height of 27 metres, providing full wraparound access while accommodating pedestrian traffic and building access throughout.
To meet the site’s technical demands, Rocket Scaffolding used Layher Allround Lightweight Scaffolding, supported by a GEDA materials winch to assist with material handling. Despite the complexity of the façade and roof areas, the project was completed by a team of just four, working methodically around the building as each section of the work progressed.
Preserving a Landmark with Safe, Efficient Access
What made this project stand out was not just the heritage status of the building, but the thoughtful execution required to complete it safely, efficiently, and with respect for its public prominence. The scaffold needed to be adaptable to architectural details while maintaining safety and access at all times, particularly with active businesses like Lone Star and Starbucks operating on the ground floor.
Rocket Scaffolding’s use of Layher systems helped ensure speed, safety, and minimal disruption throughout the project. The Allround Lightweight system allowed for faster handling and reduced strain on the crew, especially critical in the upper levels of the clock tower. The result was a smooth and professional execution that helped extend the life of a cherished New Zealand landmark.

Layher New Zealand thanks Rocket Scaffolding for their outstanding work and for sharing this exceptional heritage project.
