St. Vitus Cathedral

Layher scaffolding has been enhancing this beautiful gothic cathedral for the last year or two as it has been restored. The last piece of work is now being done on the apse at the rear of the cathedral. The first church - also consecrated to St. Vitus - that stood at the location of the present-day cathedral was an early romanesque rotunda founded by Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia in 925. after his death, Wencelaus was canonised and is the patron saint of the Czech people.

St Vitus cathedral is in the complex of Prague castle, a popular tourist destination and the largest medieval castle complex in Europe, covering 7 hectares (18 acres). The complex includes the Golden Lane, previously home to goldsmiths, now hosting various craft shops, museums and a torture chamber. The palace itself was the venue of impressive jousting tournaments, with the knights riding up a special staircase directly into the main hall.
